Small Claims Court is designed to help people resolve disputes quickly and affordably. The process is informal, and the rules are simpler than in regular civil court.

In California, individuals can sue for up to $12,500, while most businesses are limited to $6,250. However, if you’re a sole proprietor, you’re treated like an individual and can sue for the higher limit.

Although you can’t have a lawyer represent you in court, it’s perfectly fine — and often helpful — to get legal advice to make sure your paperwork is complete and your are prepared.
